Professional burnout has reached epidemic proportions, with many feeling emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted by their work. While systemic changes in workplace culture are necessary, we can also take personal steps to protect and restore our well-being. Start with micro-meditations throughout your workday. Even two minutes of focused breathing between meetings can help reset your nervous system. Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Practice loving-kindness meditation, especially toward yourself. Burnout often comes with harsh self-criticism. Spend a few minutes each day sending yourself the same compassion you’d offer a good friend facing challenges.
