A Career Change is Like A Dance
Meditations for Career Changers
A Career Change is Like A Dance
As a New York Career Counselor and NY Career Coach who has worked with thousands of individuals over my career, I have observed that the most successful career searches include many components that make a great dance:
- Grace
- Flexibility
- Strength
- Persistence
- Stamina
- Hours of patience
- Knowing what you are doing
- Adding a personal touch
When I am involved in dance there is a flow and positive energy is being eluded. Both dancing and looking for a job can be very physically and emotionally draining if you are paying attention.
Maintaining grace in a job search is extremely difficult if not the most challenging part since one is constantly being challenged and is in a very vulnerable position. How many rejections and being ignored can one person deal with? The best way to cope with this is to create a system that allows you to bounce back and take the necessary breaks and give yourself the credit you deserve if you are fully trying.
In any dance, you want to feel confident and at your best. But the career change dance almost always involves a few disappointments and moments of frustration which leaves you feeling vulnerable.
Start to establish more daily habits of well- being. Exercise, meditation, laughter, social activities, culture, and recreation. These will distract you and give you a break from the grind of the job search.
Journal writing has been found to be helpful for some. Unburden yourself from the stress and setbacks and keep track of all your efforts. You will be surprised when you read about them later as to your persistence and efforts.
